Rocky's 2010 Monthly Workshop Series
Wednesdays from 6-9pm. (Starting Jan. 6)
Slide lectures, hands-on demonstrations and group critiques will be our primary resource for exploration. We will also have an ongoing discussion and introduction to the basic design elements and principles throughout the year.
A special reminder here from Rocky about our upcoming Wednesday Workshop starting the 8th of September.. We will be exploring Terra Sigillata, Pit Firing, Smoke Firing and Beach Firing. Workshop limited to 12.
~Bring Bone-Dry Wares to first class on 8th
~Start saving banana peels, egg shells and seaweed*
~ Beach Fire will be coordinated during first session of workshop
January- Carrier/Cup Sets
Students will construct two carriers in this workshop. The first will be slab constructed using the slab roller and hand building techniques. The second carrier will be wheel thrown. Repetition, rhythm and balance will be addressed.
March-Texture/Shino/Wabi-Sabi
We will explore different methods of applying texture, investigate different consistencies to best apply texture and dive into Wabi-Sabi. (Rocky will be presenting at NCECA-Philadelphia for the latter two weeks of the month. A substitute will fill in for Rocky in his absence.)
May- Pottery as Still Life
Exploration on value and color as well as organization of pieces as still life. We will use simple watercolor painting techniques to work through color schemes and compositions. Carbon transfer methods will be used to map still lifes. Introduction to color theory will be presented.
July- All About Clay
Each type of clay presents a new personality and purity that is totally unique unto it. We will explore these personalities and investigate their potential pottery forms that await them. We will also investigate the Oribe pottery style and glaze approach while studing different types ofbalance and visual weight.
September- Pit Fire
Beginning/Intermediate pit fire techniques and intro to terra sigillata. BEACH FIRE AND POTLUCK BABY!!!!
November- Generating and Nurturing Ideas
We will investigate paper collage techniques as method of generating ideas for sculptural teapots. A series of readings will be assigned and discussed during this session. Collaborative projects will also be used as a tool for unlocking our creative potential.
